How to Use a Telescoping Extension Pole Safely

A telescoping pole keeps you off the ladder, but a few habits make it easier and safer to use.

Before you start

  • Look up. Never use a pole near overhead power lines, and keep well clear of electrical fixtures while they are switched on.
  • Check that each lock is fully closed before you lift the pole.
  • Thread the head on firmly so it cannot spin loose overhead.

While you work

  • Extend only as far as you need. Shorter is steadier and less tiring.
  • Hold the pole with both hands, one near the bottom and one higher up for control.
  • Keep the pole as close to vertical as you can. Long, flat angles put more strain on your arms and the pole.
  • Wear eye protection when dusting overhead so debris does not fall into your eyes.

When you are done

  • Wipe the pole dry, especially after outdoor use.
  • Release the locks and collapse the sections fully before storing.
